There are thousands of species with their futures hanging by a thread, who could be yesterday’s news in just a few decades. The cuter ones, like Pandas, might survive on looks alone, but there are others not as fortunate.

As for the extinct ones, one needs look no further than Wikipedia:

you should read S.M Stirling's Emberverse series. there at least the fear of being eaten alive is back. and humans step down a bit (but not too far) from the top of the food chain
